Breakaway Cycling Team

Breakaway Cycling Team is a non-profit 501 c(3) dedicated to bettering the sport of cycling through junior and women racers. They develop, empower, and produce well-rounded individuals, giving them the resources and support they need while also creating a system of giving back that positively impacts the community and cycling.

Cycling builds determination, strong work ethics, a healthy lifestyle, teamwork, confidence, dedication, respect, honor, and much more. Breakaway Cycling Team, or BCT, sees cycling as a sport that teaches and grows an individual while being something that can last for life; a great avenue to teach various skills and life lessons, as well as build community all while developing a healthy lifestyle.

Breakaway Cycling Team consists of three teams: the Women’s Elite Team, the Advanced Team, and the Devo Beginner Team. BCT strives to eliminate barriers for underprivileged youth and women and provide community resources that fill multiple needs as well as a high level of coaching.

The coaches aim to teach life skills and lessons that translate to the real world, educate and empower individuals for lifelong health, and display the importance of community in order to foster future volunteers and community leaders.

All elite women and advanced riders give back to the Devo team by frequently accompanying them on training rides. They often share the knowledge they are taught with the Devo members and others in the community, which includes mechanic knowledge, proper nutrition, team building, and much more.

Breakaway members represent cycling in the community in a positive way while on the bike. They are all representatives of the organization, which strives to advocate and educate for junior, U23, and women cycling. Members are putting a positive image back into the sport and are always open to helping any and all riders, no matter the team or level.

BCT is designed to be a full circle organization. Meaning they aim to grow and build the community while involving the community. This is best represented by the outreach programs they host, which all members of the team-women, advanced, and Devo-volunteer at.

These events include events like kids cycling camps that will be hosted at the Jones Center this July, a women’s basic mechanic clinic that was open to any lady in the Northwest Arkansas community, similarly, when the team bikes arrived, they did a full bike build clinic with the advanced team member and their parents.

Here is a short video of their women’s clinic and advanced team bike build clinic:

BCT teaches teamwork. They work together in each race to get their team on the podium. Each individual standing on the podium with their arms raised represents the Breakaway team, as it was a team effort to get that person standing up there. Each team member did a job and executed a strategic plan for the win.

Breakaway views true teamwork as something lacking in the cycling community today because individuals often don’t have the opportunity to learn true teamwork like the Breakaway organization offers. Most people don’t recognize the strategy and effort a team working together puts into a race.

BCT's riders represent much more than just themselves, so Breakaway strives to provide them with anything and everything their riders would need to achieve their goals while inspiring others.

Support for their riders includes coaching, nutritional advice and information, transportation, race prep, and much more. Anything a rider needs, Breakaway is first to try and fulfill that rider’s need.

Breakaway Cycling Team is much more than just a race team.

The Women's Elite Team

The Women’s Elite program is a community outlet for all beginner women who want to learn life skills and become empowered. It is the first in-state elite women’s team.

The program paves the way for young girls in the Northwest Arkansas community and shows, as well as encourage, they can reach higher and achieve great things in life.

The members are successful competitors that prove hard work and perseverance yield great things. They proved this most recently at the Oklahoma City Pro-Am Classic, where they finished 8th on Saturday and 10th Sunday in the highly-competitive Pro/1/2 field.

The Advnced Team

The Advanced Team is comprised of riders who have embrace the Breakaway mission while advancing in the sport. These riders race CAT 4 or above and travel nationally while giving back to the community and help develop new riders.

They are setting out to develop better cycling infrastructure, race as a team, and get more kids on bikes, all while generating positive and fun environments to shed new light on road cycling and what it truly is about.

National Race Schedule

The Women’s Elite Team and Advanced Team started their national race schedule the beginning of June.

Their national race schedule started off in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, May 31. They were racing in the Oklahoma City Pro-Am Classic, the 8th year for the event, which featured three criterium races over three days.

BCT had early success Friday night at the Midtown crit. Advanced Team junior member Grant Lampson was able to position himself to win the field sprint for 2nd place in Men’s CAT 4. He also was able to separate himself with the final hill for a 1st place finish at the Capitol Hill crit on Saturday.Advanced Team Member Sam Meullenet racing

At the Film Row crit on Sunday, the Cat 4 junior racers were able to get Grant in a solo break early on that led to yet another 2nd place finish. Advanced Team Member Sam Meullenet was able to win the field sprint behind the break for a 5th place finish in Men’s CAT 3. The women elite finished 8th and 10th place in the Pro 1/2 field.

The CAT 4 junior racers were a perfect example of executing a plan as a team to achieve their goal of getting their team on a step. True teamwork was at work that weekend.

BCT will be racing the following weekend, June 8 and 9, once again in Oklahoma at Tulsa Tough. Breakaway riders will be rolling up to the start of the George Kaiser Family Foundation Tulsa Arts District Criterium Saturday and the River Parks Criterium Sunday.

June 20, BCT sets out for Wisconsin. They will be racing in days three through six of the eleven days of racing Tour of Americas Dairyland. That is the Giro D’Graftin June 22, the Waukesha Carl Zach Cycling Classic June 23, the Downtown West Bend Concourse June 24, and finally, the Janesville Town Square Grand Prix June 25.

July 20-23 the team will be in Chicago, Illinois, for the Intelligentsia Cup. They will race in the Ray Whalen Builders Tour of Lake Ellyn criterium that returns for the fourth year, the Dennis Jurs Memorial Race, the South Chicago ‘Kermesse’ Road Race, and for the first year, the Lombard Cycling Classic.

The Dennis Jurs Memorial Race is in honor of United States Army veteran Denis Jurs, who was struck by a car and passed away at the age of 68. It is also the Illinois State Road Race Championship. Click Here to read more about Dennis Jurs.
